Soundproofing a Shooting Range can present quite a unique set of challenges.
Generally a professional indoor range consists of the concrete block or
poured concrete walls. Concrete is a good soundproofing agent and will block
the majority of the muzzle blasts that would migrate out from the range.
There are other agents that can be added to the walls and ceilings that will
add additional soundproofing to the facility.
Walls can be framed out in front of the concrete walls and rock wool or
cotton batts can be added to the wall cavities. The next step would be to add
mass loaded vinyl directly to the new stud structure using an industrial air
drive staple gun or a nail gun that shoots the roofing nails with the large
plastic heads. It is always a good idea to over lap the seams where ever
possible. You would then caulk the seams as well as the perimeter using a
quality acoustical caulk. Once the MLV is attached and sealed, your next step
would be to put up a layer of cement board like Hardy board or Wonder Board.
You can also use 5/8" drywall in a pinch. This system would add dramatically
to the soundproofing of any shooting range. The same system would be used to
soundproof the ceiling area as well.
Now that the range is completely soundproofed, the next step would be to
treat the range acoustically Acoustically treating the range would greatly
reduce the echo and reverberation within the range and the tunnel areas. This
is a big concern for most shooting Ranges. Shooting ranges generally consist
of all hard surfaces so it is necessary to add absorbent materials to the
walls and ceiling areas of the range and the tunnel. One of the best and most
effective materials for reducting echo and reverberation is call the American
Silent panel. The Silent panels is a polypropolene bead board panel that
comes in 2 ft X 4ft panels. The Silent panels will absorb and block the
reflective noise in any range application. These panels come in 1in. and 2in.
thicknesses and can he easily be cleaned using a high pressure was or simply
by hosing them down. This will remove any smoke or powder residue from the
panels.
Silent panels can be attached with hard fasteners such as deck screws, or
they can be glued up using a 2 part adhesive. It's a good idea to mount the
Silent panels to wooden furring strip that would be attached to the concrete
walls. This system would expose both sides of the Silent panel to the noise
source and thus reduce the echo and reverberation even more. These panels
can take a stray round without shattering or coming apart like other
acoustical treatment products can.
The Silent panels are light weight and durable and can easily be replaced in
the event that they become broken or damaged.
The Silent panels have been used by Barratt Fire Arms, Smith and Wesson as
well as many private and public firing ranges.

Soundproofing on a Budget
In this article we will be talking about how to soundproof your home on a
budget. With this economy people are always looking for economical ways to
soundproof their home's.
These days many homes have home theaters or entertainment rooms. When
building a home theater, you want to make it as soundproof as possible so
that you can watch a movie at 2 AM and not bother the other occupants of the
house.
If you are soundproofing from scratch, there are many common building
material that can be used in place of more costly professional soundproofing
agents. For example, you could use rolled roofing as a sound barrier in place
of many vinyl barriers. The rolled roofing will not be nearly as effective as
mass loaded vinyl, but it is better thank doing nothing to soundproof.
In todays economy, even the professional soundproofing agents are quite
affordable. Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV for short) used to cost as much as $10 per
sq ft, but these days, that same loaded vinyl costs around $1.10 per sq ft or
less. That would actually be less costly than the rolled roofing and would do
a much better job on both walls and ceilings.
Now this being said, high grade drywall itself is a decent soundproofer and
can he had at any hardware store or home improvement center. The combination
of mass loaded vinyl and drywall make for an excellent sound barrier wall
assembly, that would keep costs to a minimum.
If you are in to process of building and soundproofing a Home Studio or a
Home theater there are many economical things that can be done to soundproof
the room as well as to add very effective sound conditioning materials that
will reduce the echo in that space.
If you are willing to do the ultimate soundproofing job for your Home
theater or Studio, then you would be looking at floating your walls as well
as your ceiling using the RSIC-1 sound clips and furring channel system.
To properly float the walls and ceiling you will need to remove all existing
drywall in the room. You need to be working from the bare studs and joists.
The first step would be to add rock wool to the joist and stud cavities.
rock wool is a very effective sound batt insulation that would be placed in
the cavities. In the ceiling it is best to place the rock wool up against the
bottom of the sub floor above. It needs to contact the entire bottom of the
sub floor. Once the rock wool is installed in the joist cavities, you would
fill the rest of the cavity with regular fiberglass insulation.
Now we come to a crossroads. It would be very helpful to add a product to
both the walls and the ceiling called Mass Loaded Vinyl. MLV is a high grade
vinyl material that is impregnated with barium salts and silica which gives
it mass. The MLV would be stapled to the ends of the joists and studs to form
a soundproof membrane. You will need to caulk all of the seams of the MLV as
well as around the perimeter. Note, it would be best to over lap seams
wherever possible and then to caulk the peremeter of the vinyl membrane.
The next step would be to attach the sound clips to the joist assembly. The
RSIC-1 clips would be installed every 4 sq ft plus there would be clips at
the edges as well. Once the clips are installed as per the instructions, you
would then fit them with a metal furring channel. This channel should be a 25
gauge steel 7/8" furring channel that you will get from a local drywall
supply house. These channels will compress and fit tightly into the sound
clip.
Now that the sound clips and channels are installed, you would then screw up
a layer of 5/8" drywall. The screws must hit the center of the metal furring
channels.
As you install the drywall, make sure that you leave a small gap around the
perimeter of the drywall where the drywall ceiling does not contact the
adjoining walls. This gap will be filled in using a foam backer rod and also
acoustical caulk. Once the new ceiling is sealed around the edges, you would
simply tape mud and paint ot texture the new drywall ceiling.
Now that you ceiling is complete, you would use the same procedure to float
the walls.

Soundproofing a Pool Pump or Pool Filter
This is another common question we here at Soundproofing America are asked on a daily basis, "How can I soundproof my noisy pool pump or pool filter?" The answer is pretty simple, if the pool pump is out in the open on a concrete slab for example, then your best bet is to build and enclosure around the pump that will contain the noise of the pump within the confines of the enclosure. This enclosure can be constructed of wood or OSB or any common building material. On smaller pumps a wooden box will suffice, however you will need to make some provisions for ventilation to the pool pump. This can be done by hooking up a small computer type fan and have the fan blow cooling air through ducting directly into the box.
For larger pumps and filters, it would be best to construct a small shed or pump house that encompasses the entire pool pump and filtering system. Your pump house will have a door for servicing the pool equipment that will also need to be soundproofed.
Now let's talk about the soundproofing materials the will be used to soundproof your pump enclosure. One of the most common soundproofing agents on the market today is called Mass Loaded Vinyl or MLV for short.
MLV is a high grade vinyl that comes on rolls. This vinyl mat is impregnated with Silica and Barium salts to give it the mass of lead sheeting, but without the hazards associated with lead. The MLV would be used to line the inside of the box or enclosure that you are soundproofing. It is recommended that you over lap the seams of the vinyl whenever possible and then to caulk all seams and over lapped areas with an acoustical caulk. It's is also a good idea to tape the caulked seams with a seam sealer tape. As with any soundproofing project, sealing everything is imperative.
It you are constructing a full size walk in type enclosure, you will mount the MLV directly to the inside stud structure of the walls and also attach it to the ceiling joist structure as well. Once the MLV is stapled or nailed to the insides of the enclosure, you would again caulk all of the seams as well as the perimeter with an acoustical caulking compound. The MLV is not generally a re-enforced product, so once it is attached to the walls it is a good idea to either drywall over top of the MLV membrane or simply layer over top of the vinyl with more OSB or plywood.
This system should reduce the noise from a pool pump or loud filter remarkably and should keep your neighbors happy. I hope this article has enlightened you.
